Like Yangzi (Yangtze) River water towns such as Wuzhen,Xitang and Zhouzhuang, Zhujiajiao present a charming face: willow-lined canals; traditional residences with whitewashed walls, grey slate roofs and classical garden courtyards; calm temples; crooked cobbled lanes and ancient stone bridges spanning waterways piled by flat-bottomed boats.
The town, which was founded over 1700 years ago, occupies land that archaeological records show has known human settlement for over 5000 years. It became a regional commercial center during the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties and, as Shanghai grew in later years, was eventually absorbed into the metropolis' expanding suburbs.
Zhujiajiao the day’s destination, is a local treasure only 70min from downtown Shanghai. It is one of the partially restored water towns on the banks of Dianshan Lake. After biking, we will finish the trip at the ancient town.
